What’s Your End Goal?

What keeps you moving forward?  What keeps you going? I’ve got bruises all over my leg from having instruments pressed into and across my skin.  After a couple of days, just as the contusions begin to heal, the tools are reapplied and at times the pain is excruciating.  Having something that causes a bruise done … Read more

The Road to Recovery (Part 1: What I’ve Been Doing)

It’s been 44 days since it happened. Forty-four days since I’ve been able to play basketball, due to my injury. What have I been up to in that time? Therapy and Recovery. After going to Jewett Orthopedic to have my injury checked out, Dr. Felix, the orthopedic specialist, said he would like me to begin … Read more

Dear MJ (A Letter to Michael Jordan)

Dear MJ:

When you came into the league (NBA) in 1984 I was seven years old. My big focus was getting to know my new classmates and learning how to read small books with a few words in a big font on each page. You went on to win Rookie of the Year with a stat line of 28.2ppg, 6.5rpg, 5.9apg, and 2.4spg. I had a knack for being able to spell and led my class in gold stars.

How To Become Better Than Anyone At Anything

I believe everyone, that includes you, would like to be really good at whatever it is they chose to do on a daily basis.  I’d go one step further to say that everyone, still including you, wants to be better than anyone else that is doing what they do. It’s human nature to want to … Read more

To the Partner of a Dreamer (A short letter)

To Whom It May Concern: I know it may be tough being in a relationship with someone that has gigantic dreams.  What was once a journey filled with fun and excitement, has now too often become another hope filled process that may end up being like all the others, a big hop, skip and a … Read more

I’m Quicker Than You! (A needed change in perspective)

He’s NBA quick! In a conceding tone, that’s how a buddy of mine described my brother’s quickness on the basketball court to his nephew.  He told me so at a recent lunch we had together.  He had wanted to play two on two, since his relative was in town, but wanted to make sure his … Read more

Pop Goes the Dream (The End of My Journey?)

My Injured Leg

I got the ball on the wing, faked right, exploded left. It was game number four of 2-on-2 this past Sunday. As I planted my right foot and pushed off trying to drive past my defender, I felt a pop in between my right calf muscle. I couldn’t tell you what happened to the basketball. All I know is I felt something no athlete ever wants to feel and my feet grew roots. I couldn’t move.

Me and My $14 Basketball Socks

I used to buy bags of socks.  You know, buy one bag, get one half off or even free.  The 20 pairs of socks for $10 deal.   Regular socks. In my “sock drawer” I have ten or so pair of black and even more white.   Some of the white ones are solid and … Read more
