Iām watching my 23 month old niece all day this Friday by myself and honestly, Iām a bit nervous.
I love spending time with Ava, but other than a couple of hours when she was much younger, I havenāt been left alone with her. Even that time, I checked and made sure my neighbor (she has two kids) was going to be home, just in case.
That means if Ava gets upset, hungry, frustrated, needs to use the restroom, needs her diaper changed if she didnāt make it to the restroom, or has any other issue little kids have, there is always someone with more experience around to help.
At the end of the day, there is never any pressure on āsilly Uncleā (her words, not mine) to do anything but PLAY and have FUN!
I like it that way.
By the way, I have no kids.

Now donāt get me wrong, itās not that I dislike kids at all. In fact, I tend to think of Ava as I would my own. She has her own room in my house that sits empty, waiting to be decorated when she is old enough to pick out furniture. I made sure her room has a nice walk in closet so that she can store all of her āuncle and auntieā clothing and shoes that she piles up along the way.
I like kidsā¦or rather I love Ava.
My issue, my sense of nervousness comes from the fact that I DONāT FEEL PREPARED!
####
I like to be prepared. Scratch that, I LOVE to be prepared.
I like going to the court for hours and hoisting shot after shot. I like dribbling behind my back until it becomes second nature. I like taking on one opponent after the other and dissecting their games. My opponentās tricks, or go to moves are truly the wealth gained on my end from our battles.
I enjoy all of the burn that goes into the preparation of my eventual match-up with the great one, Michael Jordan.
After all, the late John Wooden said it best:
āFailing to Prepare, is preparing to FAIL.ā

How can I possibly prepare for this Friday with my energetic, always happy, 33-inch tall niece??
I canāt.

You Canāt Always Be Prepared
As much as Iād like to control things, the truth is, I canāt always be prepared.
Some things, like watching Ava, Iāve just got to put everything Iāve got into it and do my best.
The rational side of me knows that people young and old are having and watching kids every day and they figure it out, so it canāt be all that difficult.
Life and success is kind of the same way!
People young and old are figuring it out each and every day. To the millionaire itās easy to make money. To the mother and father, itās not a big deal to watch a youngster for a day. To the pro-blogger, growing subscribers is second nature.
Just as there are āhow toā raise a child books, there are how to make money, how to get subscribers, and the list goes on, but YOU CAN NEVER TRULY UNDERSTAND what it takes until you make the decision to DO.
You can read all the books and manuals youād like, but youāll never truly be prepared.
The trick is to turn that nervous energy into excitement and productive positivity and set the world ablaze!

Me and Ava
So this Friday, while my bro and his wife are cruising through some Caribbean locale, enjoying the sun, tropical fruit, and waves, Ava and I will be shutting down the town!
āSilly Uncleā may not be the most prepared, but like all things I do, I will give MY ALL!
Watch out, this guy is about to show a 23-month old what Michael Jordan was all about! Ok, ok, so maybe we wonāt spend the whoooole day watching MJ videos, backtracked with her favorite artist Justin Bieber, but with her being 23-months old and Jordan being the reason 23 even exists, weāve got to at least watch, āCome Fly With Meā! š
I kid, I kid.
GET OUT THERE AND DO!!!
Oh, and if you happen to be around Central Florida, stop by. Iām about to be the Michael Jordan of āsilly Uncles.ā š
Good story Kenny. I may be just a bit prejudice, but I think it will be fine if you provide as much Michael Jordan influence upon Ava as possible.
I picture those days in the future when Little “A” will bring the ball down the court, cross-over, fade back, and drain a “3” — kind of like Jimmer!
Thanks Jim! Haha, I’ll keep that in mind friday! Might slide the Jordan jersey on her as she walks in the door:)
Yeah, I can see it too! From 30 feeeeeet! WOWWWWWWWWWW!!!
Exactly! You can read every “how to” book on the market, but life is improvised!
PS: I had a similar experience when I first started looking after my nephew at 18 months. Terrifying at hour one, old hat by hour 8. And he seems largely unscarred by the experience. =]
Thanks for the comment Kellie! Totally agree!
Thanks for the insight:)
By far the most adorable picture:-).
Remember I am only a phone call away and a few miles, ha!
I really enjoyed reading it a lot.
Wonderful!!!
Thanks! š
Yes, I appreciate it! I think we will be fine! š
Love the post:-) you’re gonna be great!! Shut it down:-)
Thanks! We will! š
Kids theme and if anybody could truly be prepared for raising one (not to mention a few) is my soundtrack these days as my wife and I are expecting our daughter to enter the world this summer. In most situations I am like you Kenny- trying to do my “homework” to be prepared for meetings, casual lunches, driving around, packing, vacations, weekend plans, dinner outings. Nothing’s wrong with preparation: it’s a must have for people who are in strong need of being in control and don’t want external forces to even be a factor in their life (that’s why you prepare for external forces and have plan “B”). I am 100% with you on that. BUT, what I discovered is if I waited for a better moment, better income, better home to start planning for the first kid, I would never ever decide to have one. I would have never been ready for it. There is no doubt about it. It’s a storm, a challenge, but it’s a good one. I love spending time with kids, playing games, dressing up, messing around, watching “Lion King” on repeat. It doesn’t get boring. And as I wait for my daughter (not gonna lie I wanted a boy to raise a true MJ fan and athlete) to arrive I think “Come Fly with Me” and baby Jordan suits would fit nicely into our time we going to spend together. I will be prepared for that!
Again, thank you for the amazing post which connects your passion for basketball, your anxieties, and some common topics of parent’s life such as “What to do with this kid when he screams?”. Every man goes through it at some point in life. You just find the right place and words to share it.
