Dear MJ (A Letter to Michael Jordan)

Dear MJ:

When you came into the league (NBA) in 1984 I was seven years old. My big focus was getting to know my new classmates and learning how to read small books with a few words in a big font on each page. You went on to win Rookie of the Year with a stat line of 28.2ppg, 6.5rpg, 5.9apg, and 2.4spg. I had a knack for being able to spell and led my class in gold stars.

How To Become Better Than Anyone At Anything

I believe everyone, that includes you, would like to be really good at whatever it is they chose to do on a daily basis.  I’d go one step further to say that everyone, still including you, wants to be better than anyone else that is doing what they do. It’s human nature to want to … Read more

Me vs. WNBA Player, 2,118 Free Throws in a Row, and more stuff to make Michael Jordan sweat! :-) (What I’m working on)

The goal, as you know, is for me to get a game of 1-on-1 vs. Michael Jordan.  I know, I know, not a whole lot of hooping going on here lately at mevsMJ.com.  That’s what happens when I get injured and the doc says be patient Kenny! That doesn’t mean I haven’t been working diligently … Read more

I’m Quicker Than You! (A needed change in perspective)

He’s NBA quick! In a conceding tone, that’s how a buddy of mine described my brother’s quickness on the basketball court to his nephew.  He told me so at a recent lunch we had together.  He had wanted to play two on two, since his relative was in town, but wanted to make sure his … Read more

Great Expectations (My Journey to Inspire and Motivate)

“Whatever your life’s work, do it well.  A man should do his job so well that the living, the dead, and the unborn could do it no better.” – Martin Luther King, Jr. If I had seen the aforementioned MLK, Jr. quote before, I couldn’t recall.   On the celebration of his birthday this past … Read more

Austin Rivers gives ME a lesson in Return on Investment

Friday night found me sitting on one of many long pine benches that make up a set of bleachers, shoulder to shoulder, about as close as you’d ever want to sit with anyone.  To my left, a client and former Duke grad, his two sons and nephew.   On the other side me was a … Read more

Try (and One or Two Things I NEED From You!)

The year was 1993. The Chicago Bulls had just won their third NBA Championship in a row, the first team to do so in 27 years. For the third consecutive year Michael Jordan was named the most valuable player (MVP) of the NBA Finals. In that Finals series against the Phoenix Suns, Jordan averaged an NBA Finals record 41 points per game, and still grabbed 8.5 rebounds per game and dished out 6.3 assists.

Today I Could Have Met LeBron James

It’s Not Going to Be Easy, Nor Should It Be! (Why YOU Should Keep Pushing Forward!)

There was almost no post today. I had closed my macbook and given myself an excuse to miss my first scheduled posting. Last night I came home from playing hoops with the intent of finishing up a post for this morning.  Instead, what began with one text message from a close friend, led to a … Read more

Christmas in October?

The National Basketball Association or NBA as us hoopsters call it (haha) kicked off its regular season two nights ago and this year my feeling going into the basketball season is different. Actually how I feel about this NBA season is familiar, I just haven’t felt it in sometime. Over 20 years ago my then … Read more

Being Great is SERIOUS Business!

Prior to entering the financial arena 10 years ago, I interned and worked in the sports department for the local abc affiliate in Orlando, Florida for four and a half years.  This is just one story from my days in TV. The Chicago Bulls were in town (Orlando/1997) and going through the pregame warm-ups prior … Read more

Who Plays with Michael Jordan?

Going through high school, a core group of us could be found at a court somewhere in town almost nightly.  On weekends it was important to have a reputation of being able to play, due to the large number of people waiting and the limited number of courts, being one.  If you couldn’t play well, … Read more
